Cool Interviews

by Marjorie on November 12, 2007

Astrid DesLandes, a Calgary-based Frenchwoman who runs a company that conducts seminars on French business and social etiquette, was kind enough to comment on my blog after I posted a quote from her that was originally published on Canada’s MSN page about French Flair. Anyhoo, of course I had to check out her site and found some TV interviews she’s given to Canadian TV in her archives.

It’s funny how different Canadian talk shows are from American ones, at least from the looks of the ones DesLandes posts on her site. The presenters allowed her to discuss her points at length without interruption, unlike most US-based talk shows where the host just comes across as someone who loves the sound of his/her voice so much that s/he will use it as often as s/he can, even talking over her guests. The segments in which DesLandes were featured are longer than the average piece on American shows and are simpler in execution.

Anyway, I enjoyed DesLandes’ exposition on what makes French life different from la via americaine. She is very careful not to give the impression that North American life is inferior to that as enjoyed by the French, for which she should be commended. (I hate the self-loathing attitude of many Francophiles!) Instead, she obviously takes great pleasure in sharing some of the Frenchwoman’s secrets to enjoying life to the fullest, regardless of where one lives or what one’s nationality is.
