It’s here! It’s here!

by Marjorie on January 16, 2008

That sound you here would be that of my jumping up and down with excitement.

If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you’ll know that I won the grand prize in an Elle magazine contest: an Escada The Patent Bag. For awhile there, though, I wasn’t sure if it wasn’t all just a dream or a very elaborate hoax. My contact at Hachette Filipacchi Media (Elle‘s publisher) at gone on vacation shortly after I sent in my paperwork for what seemed like forever, and I hadn’t heard from anyone at the company about when I could expect my purse. So I called on Monday, left a message with the PR person handling the contest, and voila! That evening I got a DHL notification of a package from the company, scheduled to arrive chez moi by Tuesday afternoon. And when I got home last night, there it was.

Wow. I mean, wow. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Big and roomy and — although I’d always disliked patent leather because of its stiffness — soft and buttery. It’s a deep cherry red with silver hardware and black inner lining. You can’t tell from the photo because it lacks scale, but this purse is pretty big — the body alone is probably 15″ x 15″ x 5″. It’s literally the perfect purse for me, as it’s roomy enough for my wallet, cell phone, day planner, cosmetics case, the million pens and pencils I carry, brush, medication box, and even a couple of paperbacks. Even with all that inside, it holds its shape and stands in place, thanks to a flexible but sturdy frame. Plus, it came in a big black cloth bag (see photos — it’s under the purse) in which I can store the purse when it’s not in use (as everyone recommends). I’ll post more photos as I wear it out and about town. It’ll be like that commercial with the guy who takes a photo of his daughter’s teddy bear everywhere he goes around the world.

Big Sigh. I’m so in love with my new bag, I think B. is jealous. Seriously, I know I’m wading deep into the muck of samsara here, as I stare in awe at my new, free handbag (plus taxes). But I can’t help but sigh in happiness as I imagine our many happy days together in the future and think, “Yeah. Life is good.”

I mean to also say, “A massage AND your bag, what a great DAY!”
And now I am off to get my massage…

Bonjour, CC!! I know, isn’t today just LOVELY! I tend to be kinda fatalistic — it’s the Filipino in me coming out again, very Jewish in that way — but I refuse to think about the other shoe falling or whatever and just enjoy today. The massage was soooo lovely, too. I can’t wait to hear about yours!

I actually thought about your purse today. What a coincidence! It’s beautiful…and free!

You know, since I heard about your email I’ve been second guessing deleting my “you won” spam’s.

:-) HA!

Dear Colleen,

Bonjour! Thank you! It is very beautiful indeed. Despite my enthusiasm, I hesitate to even take it out of its bag now. I’m so scared to lose it or do something to ruin it!

You should be able to tell pretty quickly whether or not an email is legitimate. I delete just about all of the “You won…” emails without even opening them. This particular email, though, had my full name in the Subject line, which is unusual enough for me to at least open the email.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that one should automatically rule out everything else. ;-) Emails just a lot more annoying than it was 15 years ago, when it was just me, a couple of fellow geeks, and a few universities with a handful of interesting pics and docs to FTP or gopher.

Have a lovely day!

Salut,
Marjorie

Bonsoir, Amarie! Yes, it’s amazing to look at. I can’t to gather up the nerve to actually carry it around!

Thanks for your comment!

If you ever need to go on vacation and you are only taking a straw bag and an evening bag—I would be happy to babysit your Escada red bag.

It is really lovely. Congratulations. You so deserve this with all the identity stuff and the impending move. Enjoy it in good health!!!

Dear LBR, awww, the Purse is very pleased to know that she’ll be in good hands if and when I’m away. ;-)

I should start something like that BagBorrowOrSteal concept. Except I’ll have just this one bag. Hmmm…there’s something wrong with that biz plan, I’m sure.

Merci beaucoup!

Salut,
Marjorie
