Some of you may be familiar with Paula Begoun, aka the Cosmetics Cop. She’s written some hugely popular books about the cosmetics industry, skincare, and extensive reviews of just about any beauty product on the market. She also has her own line of skincare and makeup called Paula’s Choice, but she’s never hesitated to recommend other brands in addition to her own, both in her books and on her Web site.
Anyway, she has an excellent article in this week’s newsletter about applying mascara. If you’re a newbie to makeup like me, I recommend that you read this article. It has some tips on how to apply without risking breakage or clumping as well as a distinction between waterproof and water-soluble mascara. All in all, a quick and informative read!
Having read this, I now question Jolie in NYC‘s recommendation to apply ten layers of mascara per lash. I love Nadine and think she knows her stuff, but Paula does have a point about the weight of too much mascara on the eye and the higher risk of breakage with excess application.

10 layers per lash! Wow! I’m not a big everyday make-up girl, so it’s hard to imagine taking the time – not to mention the tiny little brush thingy -to apply to each lash. *ha ha*
Colleen, I’ve stopped applying the 10 layers. You’d think that the stray lashes on my cheek would be a big sign that perhaps I was doing something wrong. Duh.
As for individual lash brushing, ahhh, I don’t think so.
Salut,
Marjorie
