Belated Happy Mardi Gras!

by Marjorie on February 6, 2008

Er, a post on Biscuits & Brioche just reminded me that yesterday was Mardi Gras. Good grief, I really have lapsed in my Catholic faith, haven’t I? Isn’t it a little early this year?

I’m debating on whether or not to pursue a Lenten fast this year. As I’m just coming off the elimination diet I started a few weeks ago for health reasons, I’m reluctant to subject myself to even more restrictions when it comes to food. As it is, weaning myself off the diet has been harder than I thought, given its relatively short duration this time (two weeks, as opposed to my usual four- to six-week regimen). Because of a time crunch yesterday, I ended up picking up some Taco Bell for lunch (no comments, please!). I rarely have fast food, but when I do, it’s almost always The Bell, and always the same thing: bean burrito and a side of nachos. Very filling. (I actually worked 2 summers there when I was in college. Believe it or not, the food was actually relatively healthy then. We used fresh produce, almost all of which was chopped/sliced/diced on site and grated the cheese fresh everyday. Now, I think nearly everything comes to the store prepackaged and processed.)

This time, though, it left me feeling slightly nauseous all afternoon and through today. That’s never happened to me, so I’m wondering if my delicate stomach — fresh off a toxin-free diet — is now rebelling against the introduction of such questionable fare. Yo no quiero Taco Bell, indeed! It’s kind of a good thing, right, since that means that the diet has worked and has rejiggered my system so that it recognizes subpar foods. Still, I’ll miss my 99-cent bean burrito oozing with hot sauce and melted cheese.

Anyway, about Lent…

It being Ash Wednesday, of course, it’s a little late to start thinking about what foods to give up. Anyone else out there considering making a personal sacrifice for 40 days?

Bonjour, emtc1229! I’ve done that. It makes the Easter feast soooo memorable and luscious.

Merci for your comment!

You can eat only healthy foods/no junk for a mere week and when you have that first bowl of chips, your body definitely notices. We really do put so much garbage into our system.

Dear Randal, bonjour! Well, I’ve resolved the dilemma by giving up…swear words. For every “bad” word I say, I drop a dollar in a jar. My old boss and I did this a couple of years ago during Lent, and we ended up donating about $75 to charities fighting domestic violence. Good times.

So far, I’m up to $6. And I just started. Sigh.

Salut,
Marjorie
