Those of you who’ve been reading My Inner French Girl from the beginning know that I’m a huge, huge fan of Nadine Haobsh, aka Jolie in NYC. Nadine was a rising talent in the world of women’s publishing, serving as beauty editor for one of the largest women’s mags in the country, when that same world exploded in her face after it was revealed that she was the brains behind the gossipy blog Jolie in NYC. Never mind that there was nothing on it that one couldn’t find anywhere else on the Internet or even in your average tabloid — her bosses were furious because she actually had the gall to happily admit that (horrors! ) beauty mag staffers are routinely treated to high-end swag that plebes like you and I can only dream of: spa trips; unlimited massages, hair treatments, facials, mani-pedis, designer fashions, etc.; and all the beauty products you could ever desire.
Anyway, once the news broke out on Jolie’s identity, Nadine’s own life changed completely. Ladies Home Journal fired her, Seventeen rescinded a job offer to serve as their beauty editor, and she landed on the New York Post‘s Page Six. All in a day’s work.
Of course, this was three years ago — ancient history in blog terms. If the publishing world was skittish then and thought that they could intimidate would-be bloggers, they obviously were very disappointed. Back then, bloggers were considered persona non grata in the traditional media; now they’re being courted by everyone from those same beauty industry execs to the two major political parties.
And Nadine? She continues to post on her enormously popular beauty advice/gossip site (the same blog she was running when she got canned) and has a two-book deal with Harper-Collins. Talk about a comeback, eh?
Anyhoo, the reason I’m posting about her instead of my latest mascara or foundation discovery is because she very, very graciously gave me a copy of her latest book, Beauty Confidential, a juicy tome packed with loads of tips on everything from applying eyeliner to using a self-tanner. Anyone who’s visited her site will be familiar with her cheery, hilarious writing style, and she continues that self-deprecating humor and charming joie de vivre in her first book.
Beauty Confidential is definitely one of my favorite beauty books, mostly because of Nadine’s sunny personality and her refusal to take anything — makeup, vanity, celebrities, least of all herself – seriously. She truly enjoys what she does, from blogging to experimenting with makeup to writing and sharing some great gossip about the people who populate her new home, Los Angeles. The book is filled with detailed info on some of her favorite products (I don’t think a word’s been invented yet to describe her affinity with Bare Escentuals, but I think obsessed comes pretty close), as well as lists upon lists of other well-regarded lines. Want to know how to best apply concealer under your eyes? That’ll be page 112, followed by a couple more pages on the best concealers on the market (including YSL’s Touche Eclat Radiant Touch, which my mother is obsessed with). Can’t figure out which moisturizers are best for your skin? Check out pages 132-133. Curious about the eye makeup trick Nadine learned from a sultry young French student when she spent a summer at St. Paul Trois-Chateaux in France at the age of fifteen? Get thee to pages 94-96.
By the way, Nadine was on NBC’s Today show sometime in November, giving tips on achieving the 5-minute look. It was fun watching it, knowing how nervous she was in the run-up to the event (she posted about it several times before the big day), and I was a little annoyed with host Natalie Morales’ inability to correctly pronounce Nadine’s last name, even after being told how in the end (What can I say? With a last name like Asturias, I’ve become pretty sensitive about people butchering my name), but overall it’s a short, fun and informative video.
Okay, so we’ve established that I’m a fan of Nadine. When Beauty Confidential came out in early November, I immediately bought a copy at my local B&N and have dog-eared it several times already. Even after I told Nadine that I already had a copy of her book, she very generously sent me another one anyway to give away on my blog. Yay! See why she’s my girl?
In any case, the drawing’s as simple as the others have been: just submit a comment to this post telling me what your favorite, must-have, I’m-absolutely-obsessed-with-it beauty product is, and you’re automatically entered into the drawing. Contest ends at 5pm Mountain on Friday, March 14th. The winner will be announced either that evening or on Saturday morning. In the absence of a third-party accounting firm like Ernst & Young, the ever-reliable and gorgeous B. will randomly pick a name out of all the submitted responses.
And if you don’t have a favorite beauty product? S’okay. My favorite beauty “product” is sleep, followed closely by sunscreen. Of course, if you don’t have any favorite beauty products, I’ll wonder why you’d even bother entering this contest anyway. But to each his/her own.
Good luck!
Privacy Policy: Your name and contact info (including the winner’s mailing address) is only going to be used for the purposes of this contest only. I have no interest in keeping your info beyond this event and will never share that info with anyone. I have too much other stuff to keep up with anyway.

My fav beauty product is bronzer and currently, I’m loving Tarte’s Park Avenue Princess!
Bonjour…I just started reading your blog a few weeks ago and am a fellow Francophile…
I love my Bobbi Brown foundation because it’s so light and natural-looking. I use the tinted moisturizer all over and then dab foundation stick on a few areas that need heavier coverage. BB Pot Rouge is awesome, too, and dual-purpose to boot – blush and lipgloss – very sheer and subtle.
Just one? Well, my newest love is Ole Henriksen Enlighten Me. It’s really evened out my skin tone.
I’m also addicted to Philosophy’s Help Me retinol, Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Acne Wash, and Clarins UV Plus SPF 40, which is $39 for one ounce, but since it’s the only sunscreen that doesn’t break my skin out or make me look pasty (believe me, I’ve tried just about everything imaginable over the course of 10 years), I suck it up and slurge on sunscreen.
My favorite is an oldie but a goodie – Revlon Super Lustrous lipstick in Toast of New York. I think the color just looks great on me and goes with almost everyhing I own. It’s one of the few makeup items I never grow bored with and always come back to.
If Revlon every discontinues it, I’ll be lost.
I think my favorite beauty product would be my H2O+ facial moisturizer. I don’t think they carry that particular line anymore – it was on clearance so I bought 3 just to stock up! (I don’t know what I’ll do when I run out!) It’s the perfect amount of moisture for my dry skin without being too creamy, and it has SPF 15. My skin always feels good after I put it on!
I couldn’t decide between my Bourjois makeup so I went with my moisturizer. ;D
Of course I have to wash my face, moisturize and put on make-up everyday and it goes without saying that sunscreen is also one of my “necessary” products. But my favorite beauty product is Chanel No. 5 perfume. I wear it almost every day and when I put it on it just gives me that extra something “Frenchy” and sophisticated to remind me that I am a chic, elegant, beautiful woman (even if I’m the only one who thinks so).
My brand new favorite as of yesterday afternoon is Bobbi Brown’s gel eyeliner. My 14-year-old daughter is coming to the end of her winter break and dragged me to the Sephora flagship on Champs Elysee to ward off the back-to-school blues. La Belette Rouge had raved about the BB gel eyeliner, so I wanted to give it a try. On my first pass by BB I didn’t see the eyeliner. I was looking for a tube — apparently I’ve been living in a cave because an after-purchase internet search revealed that beauty types have been writing about this product for years. Anyway, a very sweet Sephora staffer showed me the little pots and proceeded to apply it to the roots of my upper lashes. I explained that I am “nulle” (totally inept) with eyeliner, and she laughed and said that this product was for people like me! I’m so impressed with this product. I may even start wearing eyeliner on a regular basis, something I generally reserve for the occasional big night out.

So many things to choose from, but one thing definitely stands out, because without it I would walk around looking like I didn’t have eyebrows. My M.A.C. Wedge Matte Eye Shadow. I use it to make my very blonde eyebrows visible. I never leave home without it!
I’d have to say that my fav of the moment is MAC’s Cream Color Base in Pearl. I’m hooked. It really makes my eyeshadow POP!
Hello – My favorite beauty product that I just can’t live with out is DECLEOR Paris ( a French product ofcourse) This stuff is a miracel in a jar. I just to have really bad acne and nothing seemed to work. I would use all the products that had Salicylic Acid in it but to no avail every time zit after zit after zit. I found this one day and my life has changed for the better. It is made of ylang ylang pure essential oil that works with your own oil on your face to balance out perfectly!! Thanks for the giveaway!
Check out my blog for a mini pink Camera give-away @ http://tissupapers.blogspot.com/
Thanks

Hi, I am happy to have found her site. I love it! I have a birthmark on my face, so I have to use my Dermablend. A favorite extra of mine is lipstick. No special kind at this point because I am still looking for that perfect shade. It has to be warm colored, tannish and nude. I love a matte finish. Please enter me in your fabulous contest. Thanks,Cindi

A Miracle in the morning!
My new favorite is Clarins eye make up remover. Before this I didn’t realize how much mascara I was really leaving on my skin over night.
Great review of the book, by the way. You motivated me to check it out.
I cannot live without Lancome’s Galateis Clarte Cleansing Fluid for face and eyes! YES EYES TOO!!!
I have sensitive skin and this is the cleanser that gets all the make-up off at the end of the day and does not leave me looking like a stratchy red faced and bugged eye sad little person!
May they NEVER discontinue it!
I say a prayer everynight to the Cleanser Gods!
I recently discovered your blog (just last week), why did it take me so long?
Anyway, my favorite beauty product is organic coconut oil. I have dry, sensitive skin and it feels so good to massage it in (and smells great).
I also love The Body Shop’s Musk perfume.
I know I’m late to the primer lovefest, but I cannot get enough of Smashbox’s primer. Love it love it love it.
Wow! You guys have come up with some awesome favorites! And no, it’s never too late to get on the Smashbox bandwagon. Heck, I just tried it myself in December, and now my mom and I are hooked on the O-glow. Yum.
Keep ‘em coming! My latest favorite is Juice Organics’ facial cleanser. Clean, clean, clean, with fruit acids for mild exfoliation. Awesome stuff.
Salut,
Marjorie
I’m coming out of the online closet on your blog (so to speak)! My favorite is NARS Tobago lipstick. It’s just a slightly deeper shade of my own lips. It looks dark in the tube but goes on sheer.
I’ve never heard of this book but it interests me. I am Canadian born and raised in our french province of Quebec (although I’m Irish and Scottish)
I so love the french culture, language, food and flare for decorating.
Quebec City is one of my favorite places to go – especially within the old city gates… it’s like being in Europe.
Blessings and count me in your draw please.
I definitely cannot live without my Benetint by Benefit
Anais Anais eau de toilette– it doesn’t really beautify me–but it makes me smell good! And I like wearing it….makes me happy!
Okay, here it is, though I usually can’t afford to keep it on hand. In fact, I’m out of it right now. But, I absolutely LOVE Oil of Olay Regenerist! I need to support that Love somehow…because I’m completely out of it now. boo-hoo

My favorite beauty product is water. LOTS of water. Keeps the skin fresh and full. Also, I’m addicted to St Ives apricot exfoliant.
And the winner is….DRUM ROLL…
PARIS BREAKFASTS! Congratulations!
And thanks to everyone for participating in the contest! Wow, I didn’t expect such a great turnout. And merci mille for all your fantastic beauty product suggestions! As a beauty junkie, I’m always happy to hear about what others love and swear by.
Stay tuned next week — I have an even better giveaway lined up for next weekend!
Again, thanks for participating! Have a great weekend!
Salut,
Marjorie
