Happy First Day of Spring, everyone!
I’m in the winding-down phase of a big advertising assignment, but I thought I’d share with you photos from the most recent advertiser interview/photo shoot.
The company is one of the largest greenhouses/nurseries in the Grand Valley area and has the most beautiful and extensive collections of plants I’ve ever seen. One of the staff I interviewed said that one of their greatest strengths is that they only grow those plants that can thrive in this dry, high-altitude desert climate. You’d think there wouldn’t be many of those, but when I toured the facility today….wow.
Rows upon rows upon rows of neatly organized and fresh little seedlings pushing their way skywards in these plastic pots. The aroma was heavenly, not at all overpowering despite the hundreds and hundreds of different plants and flowers crammed into these enormous greenhouses. I knew I missed spring, but didn’t realize just how much until I stood in the middle of all these colors and aromatic sensations and just inhaled my first breath of a spring garden.
Astarte’s Student wrote recently in her blog about her eagerness to begin her spring planting, and now that I’m reminded yet again of just how glorious an exercise it can be, I’m sharing her enthusiasm. I was ready to scoop up a few boxes of plantings but restrained myself by reminding myself that a) I’ve no money right now, and b) more importantly, B. would definitely want to be with me when I do this. He loves gardening as much as I do; in fact, when it comes to the creepy-crawlies scavenging around our container garden, he’s in charge of disposing of them post-haste.
I did, however, take tons of photos for the ad, some of which I’ve posted here for those of you as excited about the upcoming spring as I am. Enjoy!

p.s. BTW, “Riley” is a pseudonym I used for the longest time on the Web. Hence the caption Photos by Riley.
p.p.s. If you’re reading this via an RSS reader or email, the slideshow may not upload onto your screen, which means you’ll need to read this post directly on the blog itself. I don’t know why that happens, but I apologize for any inconvenience!

Oh YOU!
I’m glad my enthusiasm is infectious and not annoying! heh
I was just thinking about what else to write about because I need another hummingbird feeder, and I’m thinking of getting into mason bees! I can write about critters as much as the plants.
Oh My! The store looks absolutely cool. I especially like the kitty stretching in the second photo. HHmmm, like a Where’s Waldo for gardening stores
Dear AS, oh no, not at all! Now you’ve got me salivating over the nursery’s huge inventory!
The hummingbird feeder sounds lovely! Make sure you post photos! I had a bird feeder once, but the birds refused to go near it. When B. and I got married and he was helping me move out of my place, he dismantled the feeder and was about to put it in the truck when he realized that hornets had built a nest inside! He flung it into an open field and ran like hell. Fortunately, he got away fast enough.
Colleen, I had to comb through the photos to find that cat you wrote of. Cute!
Salut,
Marjorie
Hornets! Yikes! I should post photos…we get hummers year-round so they’re always around! I’m hoping to eventually log all the birds I see in the yard. I also want to attract frogs and a toad. I’m a nerd like that.
Ooo, I’d love to see photos of hummingbirds. I’ve only ever seen them “live” a handful of times. Guess they don’t frequent the desert much.
Salut,
Marjorie
