Nights of Wine and Tomatoes

by Marjorie on August 29, 2008

The verdict on last night’s choice of wine, Carlson Vineyard’s 2007 Laughing Cat Reisling: superb. Even B. loved it, really loved it, a ringing endorsement since he ordinarily cares for white wines. Very crisp, clean, not especially sweet and definitely not cloying. Chilled for a couple of hours in the coldest part of the fridge, it paired so well with the tomato and mozzarella salad. B. and I usually eat more substantial meals in the evening since we have more time to prepare more elaborate meals, but the wine and the salad — plus a quarter-loaf of some fresh, crusty ciabatta — more than satisfied our appetites. We went to bed feeling light and cool and very, very content. That‘s what a late summer meal’s supposed to do to oneself. Not overly stuff you or make you feel dreary and bloated, but rather refreshed and wonderfully satiated.

If you’re a wine lover and want to try something different with your favorite light summer repasts, definitely try this one. I don’t think the vineyard’s distribution is very extensive; they’re mostly concentrated in the Southwest, namely New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, but I think you can order from them online. The owner is a doll and would probably be happy to chat with you if you’re interested in their other varietals. If you want this particular one, though, you’d best hurry and order soon as Parker Carlson did mention in the interview yesterday that he plans on entering the Riesling in the Colorado Mountain WineFest competition in mid-September. As he won in 2006 and 2007, I expect he’ll place very highly again this year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he sold out all the bottles by the 20th of September!

I probably won’t be able to taste the wine, but I’ve gotta love its name!

Oh, but then you must try Colorado Cellars’ Roadkill Red, Betty. It tastes awful, but the name was worth the $9 purchase. ;-)

Salut,
Marjorie

Actually it was the “Carlson” part that I liked — that’s my name.
