MIFG Interview: Mariane Pearl

by Marjorie on October 11, 2009

402px-mariane_pearlI am so proud — you can’t even imagine how proud — of presenting this, the very first podcast on My Inner French Girl. Not just because of all the work that went into the project, but really mostly because of the interview subject.

Many of you remember Mariane Pearl, the widow of the slain Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl. She’s been featured in countless news reports, newspaper and magazine articles, and even an award-winning film starring Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart, based on Mariane’s memoir of the same name.

Mariane, however, is also an established journalist and filmmaker in her own right. She’s contributed to publications such as The New York Times, Self, Conde Nast Traveler, and The Sunday Times. Glamour Magazine fans will remember her “Global Diaries,” the series of articles she wrote for the publication that featured women activists around the world, from Cuba to Cambodia. The essays were later compiled into a gorgeous coffee table book titled In Search of Hope: The Global Diaries of Mariane Pearl. Her latest project is Resilient, a documentary film about four women fighting injustices in their communities.

Mariane graciously agreed to be interviewed for My Inner French Girl, and we had a wonderful and inspiring conversation via Skype on September 10, 2009.  We spoke about journalism, hope, human rights, where she gets her strength. I’m deeply honored to have spoken with her and hope you’ll enjoy listening to this podcast as much as I enjoyed producing it.

Note: This is the inaugural podcast for the newly improved My Inner French Girl. There will be many, many more to come, about one a week, mostly interviews with various writers, artists, musicians, and other creatives within the Francophile world. Stay tuned, and don’t forget to subscribe to our feed (either via email or news reader) to make sure that you’re updated whenever we have a new podcast. Also, you know I welcome any and all comments, suggestions, and even complaints, so email me anytime. Let me know, too, if there’s anyone in particular you would like to see interviewed for MIFG. I can’t promise Charlotte Gainsbourg or Carla Bruni, but you can bet I’ll do my darndest to get the most interesting folks in the Francophile world on this site. Merci mille for your support!

Merci mille, Jenny! Isn’t she just the most amazing person? I saw the Angelina Jolie movie last summer (or was it the summer before?) and read the book as well — I’m blown away by her poise and brilliance. She’s the journalist I hope to be someday.

Let me know what you think of the interview. I know it’s a little long, but I couldn’t bear to edit it any more than I already had. She’s just immensely interesting to listen to.

Salut,
Marjorie

Merci, Susan! She is, isn’t she? Would you believe I slept only about an hour or so the night before the interview? I was so nervous, it was the night before the GMAT all over again. Don’t know why, because she was so wonderful and kind and easy to talk to. I can’t wait to feature her new film once it’s out.

Salut,
Marjorie
