This weekend as I finished reading an article on a fashion site, and I just thought to myself--wow, I really hate marketing! To quote clothing designer Agnes B, "marketing is dumb and makes you stupid. You are NOT worthless because you aren't wearing (what is perceived as) the right shoes".
Marketing is built upon fear. Fear that you will appear less than someone else (in whatever way) if you don't have X product. Fear that you as you are, are not good enough. You must have X product to be accepted (by who is not a question we ever ask). I don't believe that other countries are necessarily better about marketing, I just think they are different in their approach. I heard that France has laws against unproven claims in advertising. Good for them. However, the job of a marketer is to sell a product, to do that they must create a need for a product. I understand that fear of looking unintelligent is a tactic that French advertising takes.
I sympathize with your angst in life's trials. No matter where we go, we will find them. How we decide to react to the trial (and govern ourselves when going through it) is where the hope for a better tomorrow lies. You are choosing to follow your ideals (and write and discuss the problem and how we can make things different). That is a start, because you have encouraged at least one other person to remember what is important (and it ain't the stuff!!!).

Bonjour! Finally had time to pop in and take a peek at your website :) I could write a small novella of commentary in response to your post...but I shall nip it in the bud to say that yes, all you say IS true re: the US, but one day I wish someone would write a book (& no, though many have suggested it b/c of all the challenges Le Mr & I have successfully overcome-it shall not be me) about the ACTUAL challenges that the whimsical, care-free life in France entails. And let me also honestly say, (I swear I'm not Mme Negativity!) that the marketing ploys/manipulation are creeping their way in here as well...need more realistic insight? I don't publish our private blog (the one that is tragically behind) covering the trials & tribulations of our renovation, but happy to e-mail you the sight if you want some extra special nuggets of Frogic (the term we coined for French-Logic!). Can't wait to read more on your blog :) Bisous. LR M-J

Marjorie,
You are a gifted writer. It's a pleasure reading your outlook on life. And yes, "life" in all it's aspects comes with a price tag now a days. So sad, but true. Marketing prides itself as making you think there is something wrong with you that can only be solved with their product.
Look forward to reading more of your endearing prose.
Happy Living!
